One of the many things I always said to myself and friends of mine is that I wanted to build an app. I got two different replies:
At the time, I wasn’t able to properly answer either question. I didn’t know what the app should be about, and without a clear idea, I kept postponing the act of building altogether. I realized that the real barrier was simply my lack of commitment.
I noticed the same pattern in my own work habits. Motivation would come in bursts, but it was unreliable, leaving me unable to focus on a certain task for prolonging periods of time. Most productivity tools tried to encourage focus through reminders, streaks, or inspiration, yet none addressed the moment where you decide whether to continue or quit.
That realization became the foundation for Focus Lock. Instead of designing another productivity timer, I wanted to explore what would happen if an app treated focus as a commitment rather than a suggestion, by removing distractions and making the decision to start intentional and difficult to abandon.
I personally wanted to build this app for myself, and to me, that means not overcomplicating things and keeping things as simple as possible. As long as it’s functional and aesthetic, I’m fine :)
